REFERENCES ON THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST - 1

 AA   ACTS OF THE APOSTLES

 1.   AA 368-9  "These words present before the worker for Christ a high attainment, yet this attainment ALL CAN REACH who, putting themselves under the control of the Great Teacher, learn daily in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST

The power of God's command is limitless, and the minister who in his great need shuts himself in with the Lord may be assured that he will receive that which will be to his hearers a savor of life unto life."

 2.   AA 524    "Trial is part of the education given in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST to purify God's children from the dross of earthliness.  It is because God is leading His children that trying experiences come to them.  Trials and obstacles are His chosen methods of discipline, and His appointed conditions of success."

 3.   AA 576,   "Through trial and persecution the glory---character---of God is revealed in His chosen ones.  The believers in Christ, hated and persecuted by the world, are educated and disciplined in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  On earth they walk in narrow paths; they are purified in the furnace of affliction."

 AH   ADVENTIST HOME

 4.   AH 319  "When we have good religion, we will have excellent meeting religion. Hold the fort at home.  Concentrate your family to God, and then speak and act as a Christian. Be kind and forbearing and patient at home, knowing that you are teachers.  Every mother is a teacher, and every mother should be a learner in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST that she may know how to teach, that she may give the right mold, the right form of character to her children."

BC   SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY (The only reference in all the SDABC.)

 5.   6BC 1075  "There must be a growth.  Many, having learned a little in school, think they are ready to graduate.  They think they know about all that is worth knowing.  We are not to think that as soon as we are baptized we are ready to graduate from the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  When we have accepted Christ, and in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit have pledged ourselves to serve God, the Father, Christ and the Holy Spirit--the three dignitaries and powers of heaven--pledge themselves that every facility shall be given us if we carry out our baptismal vows to "come out from among them, and be..seperate,..and touch not the unclean thing." When we are true to our vows, He says, "I will receive you." (MS 85, 1901).

 CHILD GUIDANCE

 6.   CG131 "Sacrifice Should Become Habitual.---By precept and example, teach self-denial, economy, largeheartedness, and self reliance.  Everyone who has a true character will be qualified to cope with difficulties and will be prompt in following a "Thus saith the Lord." Men are not prepared to understand their obligation to God until they HAVE LEARNED IN CHRIST'S SCHOOL to wear His yoke of restraint and obedience.  Sacrifice is the very beginning of our work in advancing the truth and in establishing institutions.  It is an essential part of education.  Sacrifice must become

habitual in all our character building in life, if we would have a building not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."

 CM   COLPORTEUR MINISTRY

 7.  * CM31  "Learn in the School of Christ.--As students, you are ever to be LEARNING IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST; You are to bring your entrusted capital of physical and mental energy into your work.  God will not accept of a divided heart.  There are men and women WHO SHOULD BE EDUCATING THEMSELVES  for canvassers, and for Bible readers (Bible instructors).

 8.  * CM35  "The knowledge of the most learned man, IF HE HAS NOT LEARNED IN CHRIST'S SCHOOL, is foolishness so far as leading souls to Christ is concerned.  God can work with those only who will accept the invitation: "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."  Matthew 11:28-30."

 9.   CM59-60 "Constantly Improving.---The follower of Jesus should be constantly improving in manners, in habits, in spirit, in labor.  This is done by keeping the eye, not on mere outward, superficial attainments, but on Jesus.  A transformation takes place in mind, in spirit, in character. The Christian is EDUCATED IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST to cherish the graces of His Spirit in all meekness and lowliness.  He is fitting for the society of heavenly angels."

 COL  CHRIST OBJECT LESSONS

 10.  COL125    "If the follower of Christ will believe His word and practice it, there is no science in the natural world that he will not be able to grasp and appreciate.  There is nothing but that will furnish him means for imparting the truth to others.  Natural science is a treasure house of knowledge which every student in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST may draw."

 11.  COL337-8  "All who would advocate the principles of truth need to receive the heavenly oil of love (the Holy Spirit) Under all circumstances reproof should be spoken in love.  Then our words will reform but not exasperate.  Christ by His Holy Spirit will supply the force and the power.  This is His work…

Not one word is to be spoken unadvisedly. No evil speaking, no frivolous talk, no fretful repining or impure suggestion, will escape the lips of him who is following Christ. The apostle Paul, writing by the Holy Spirit, says, "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth." Eph. 4:29. A corrupt communication does not mean only words that are vile. It means any expression contrary to holy principles and pure and undefiled religion. It includes impure hints and covert insinuations of evil. Unless instantly resisted, these lead to great sin.

Upon every family, upon every individual Christian, is laid the duty of barring the way against corrupt speech. When in the company of those who indulge in foolish talk, it is our duty to change the subject of conversation if possible. By the help of the grace of God we should quietly drop words or introduce a subject that will turn the conversation into a profitable channel.

It is the work of parents to train their children to proper habits of speech.  The very best school for this culture is the home life.  From the earliest years the children should be taught to speak respectfully and lovingly to their parents and to one another.  They should be taught that only words of gentleness, truth, and purity must pass their lips.  LET THE PARENTS THEMSELVES BE DAILY LEARNERS IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST".

 CH   COUNCILS ON HEALTH

 12.  CH319  "Christ gives to all the invitation:  "Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls, for My yoke is easy and my burden is light."  Matthew 11:28-30.  If all will wear Christ's yoke, if all will learn IN HIS SCHOOL the lessons that He teaches, there will be sufficient means to establish gospel medical missionary work in many places."

 13. * CH355  "Christians should carry with them, wherever they go, the sweet fragrance of Christ's righteousness, showing that they are complying with the invitation, "Learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest in your souls."  Matthew 11:29, 30.  Are you LEARNING DAILY IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST--learning how to dismiss doubt and evil surmisings, learning to be fair and noble in your dealings with your brethren, for your own sake and for Christ's sake?"

 14.  CH500  "We need, oh, so much! physicians for the soul who have been educated in THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST and who can work in Christ's lines.  Our work is to gain a knowledge of Him who is the way, the truth, and the life.

We are to interest the people in subjects that concern the health of the body as well as the health of the soul.  Believers have a decided message to prepare the way for the kingdom of God. The great questions of Bible truth are to enter into the very heart of society, to convert and reform men and women, bringing them to see the great need for preparing for the mansions that Christ declared He would prepare for all who love Him.  WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT SHALL DO ITS OFFICE WORK, HEARTS OF STONE WILL BECOME HEARTS OF FLESH, AND SATAN WILL NOT WORK THROUGH THEM TO COUNTERACT THE WORK THAT CHRIST CAME TO EARTH TO DO."

CSW  COUNCILS TO SABBATH SCHOOL WORK

 15.  CSW38 (Also found in GC599) "Many a portion of scripture which learned men pronounce a mystery, or pass over as unimportant, is full of comfort and instruction to him who has been TAUGHT IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  One reason why many THEOLOGIANS have no clearer understanding of God's word is, they close their eyes to truths which they do not wish to practice.  An understanding of Bible truth depends not so much on the power of the intellect brought to the search as the singleness of purpose, the earnest longing after righteousness."

CT   COUNCILS TO PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

(In connection with the below quote from CT20 read also Gal. 1:11-18 where the apostle Paul was trained for three years in the School of Christ. Jesus COULD NOT USE THE THEOLOGICAL TRAINING of Paul, learned while sitting at the feet of finite "Arms of flesh." Neither can we.)

 16.  CT20      "Often the training and education of a lifetime must be discarded, that one may become a learner in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  The heart must be educated to become steadfast in God."

 17.  CT50-1    "The SCHOOL OF CHRIST".....In the SCHOOL OF CHRIST STUDENTS ARE NEVER GRADUATED.  Among the pupils are both old and young,  Those who give heed to the instructions of the DIVINE TEACHER constantly advance in wisdom, refinement, and nobility of soul, and thus they are prepared to enter the higher school where advancements will continue throughout eternity"......

"Those who become so absorbed in less important studies that they cease to learn in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST are meeting with infinite loss.  They insult the divine Teacher by the rejection of the provisions of His grace,"

 18.  CT65  "The teacher may understand many things in regard to the physical universe; he may know about the structure of animal life, the discoveries of natural science; the inventions of mechanical art;  but he cannot be called educated, he is not fitted for his work as an instructor of the youth, unless he has in his own soul a knowledge of God and Christ.  HE CANNOT BE A TRUE EDUCATOR UNTIL HE IS A LEARNER IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST RECEIVING AN EDUCATION FROM THE DIVINE INSTRUCTOR."

 19.  CT191     "The teachers who work in this part of the Lord's vineyard need to be self-possessed, to keep their temper and feelings under control, and in SUBJECTION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.  They should give evidence of having, not a one-sided experience, but a well-balanced mind, a symmetrical character.  Learning daily in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST such teachers can wisely educate the children and youth.  Self-cultured, self-controlled, under discipline to Christ, having a living connection with the Great Teacher, they will have an intelligent knowledge of practical religion; and keeping their own souls in the love of God, they will know how to exercise the grace and patience and Christlike forbearance. "

 20.  CT211     "Before he attempts to guide the youth, a teacher should learn to control himself.  If he is not a constant learner in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST; if he has not the discernment and discrimination that would enable him to employ wise methods to his work; if he cannot govern those in his charge with firmness, yet pleasantly and kindly, how can he be successful in his teaching?"

 21.  CT265-6   "The teacher's safety lies in learning daily in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  He who learns in this school will hide himself in Jesus and will remember that as he deals with his students he is dealing with a blood- bought heritage.  In this school he will learn to be patient, humble, generous, noble.  The molding hand of God will bring out in the character the divine image."

 22.  CT372     "The temptation to be first would be quenched in the lessons daily learned in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  They would not lean so confidently to their own understanding."

 23.  CT373     "When teachers are willing to sit in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST and learn of the Great Teacher, they will know far less in their own estimation then they do now.  When God becomes the teacher, He will be acknowledged, His name will be magnified.  The students will be as were the young men in the school of the prophets, upon whom the Spirit of God came, and they prophesied."

 24.  CT410     "Many who are seeking the efficiency for the exalted work of God by perfecting their education in the schools of men will find that they have FAILED of learning the more important lessons.  By NEGLECTING to submit themselves to the impressions of the Holy Spirit, by not living in obedience to all of God's requirements, their spiritual efficiency has been weakened; they have lost what ability they had to do successful work for the Lord. ABSENTING THEMSELVES from the SCHOOL OF CHRIST, they have forgotten the sound of the Teacher's voice, AND HE CANNOT DIRECT THEIR COURSE."

 25.  CT449     "The human agent must place himself as a willing student in the School of Christ.  As he accepts the grace freely offered him, the presence of the Saviour in the thoughts and in the heart will give him decision of purpose to lay aside every weight, that the heart may be filled with the fullness of God."

 26.  CT514 "Those especially who have the ministry in view should feel the importance OF THE SCRIPTURAL METHOD OF MINISTERIAL TRAINING.  They should enter heartily into the work, and while they study in the schools, they should learn of the Great Teacher the meekness and humility of Christ.  A convent-keeping God has promised that in answer to prayer His Spirit shall be poured out upon these LEARNERS IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST, that they may become ministers of righteousness."

 COUNSELS TO WRITERS

 27.  CW72 "One of the greatest curses in our world (and it is seen in churches and in society everywhere) is the love of supremacy.  Men become absorbed in seeking to secure power and popularity.  This spirit has manifested itself in the ranks of sabbathkeepers, to our grief and shame. But spiritual success come only to those who have learned meekness and lowliness in THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST."

 DA   DESIRE OF THE AGES

 28.  DA330  "Learn of Me," says Jesus; "for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest."  WE ARE TO ENTER THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST, to learn from Him meekness and lowliness.  Redemption is that process by which the soul is trained for heaven.  This training means a knowledge of Christ.  It means emancipation from ideas, habits, and practices that have been gained in the SCHOOL OF THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS.  The soul must be delivered from all that is opposed to loyalty to God."

 Ed   EDUCATION

The below is a graphic picture of the first SCHOOL OF CHRIST taught by Jesus Himself, while still on earth.

 29. ED85  "The first PUPILS OF JESUS were chosen from the ranks of the common people.  They were humble, unlettered men, these fishers of Galilee; men unschooled in the learning and customs of the Rabbis, but trained by the stern discipline of toil and hardship.  They were men of native ability and of teachable spirit; men who could be instructed and molded for the Saviours work.  In the common walks of life there is many a toiler patiently treading the round of his daily tasks, unconscious of latent powers that, roused to action, would place him among the world's great leaders.  Such were the men called by the Saviour to be His co-laborers.  And they had the advantage of three years' training by the GREATEST EDUCATOR THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN."

 EV   EVANGELISM

 30. EV205  "STORIES, ANECDOTES, JESTING, AND JOKING"  "An Ambassador for Christ----The minister of the gospel who is a laborer together with God, WILL LEARN DAILY IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST......No light, trifling words will fall from his lips; for is he not an ambassador of Christ, bearing a divine message to perishing souls?  All jesting and joking, all lightness and trifling is painful to the cross-bearing disciple of Christ."

 FE   FUNDAMENTALS OF EDUCATION

 31. FE101  "The young have many lessons to learn, and the most important one is to know themselves.  They should have correct ideas of their obligations and duties to their parents, and SHOULD BE CONSTANTLY LEARNING IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST to be meek and lowly of heart."

 32.  FE116  "Let those who are competent to teach youth, STUDY THEMSELVES IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST and learn lessons to communicate to youth."

 33.  FE169  "The class of educators and learners who deem themselves wise, KNOW NOTHING AS THEY OUGHT TO KNOW IT.  They need to learn meekness and lowliness in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST that they may esteem highly what heaven regards as excellent."

 34.  FE191  "In the name of the Master I appeal to the young men and women who claim to be sons and daughters of God, to obey the word of God.  I appeal to teachers in our schools to set a right example to those with whom they are associated.  Those who would be qualified to mold the character of the youth, MUST BE LEARNERS IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST, that they may be meek and lowly of heart, as was the divine Pattern."

 35.  FE223  "Those teachers who have not a progressive religious experience, who are not learning DAILY LESSONS in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST, that they may be ensamples to the flock, but who accept their wages as the main thing, ARE NOT FIT FOR THE SOLEMN, AWFULLY SOLEMN, POSITION THEY  OCCUPY ......Let the teachers who claim to be Christians be learning daily in the School of Christ His lessons."

 36.  FE255  "They do not realize that in order to be a savor of life unto life they must be under spiritual discipline and training, learning in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  Without this spiritual discipline, they become inefficient, ignorant, and undeveloped, and see no necessity for the spiritual training and knowledge which would qualify them to hold positions of influence and usefulness."

 37.  FE260  "When a teacher manifests impatience or fretfulness toward a child, the fault may not be with the child one half as much as with the teacher.  Teachers become tired with their work, then something the children say or do does not accord with their feelings, but will they let Satan's spirit enter into them, and lead them to create feelings in the children very unpleasant and disagreeable, through their own lack of tact and wisdom from God?  There should not be a teacher employed, unless you have evidence by test and trial, that he loves, and fears to offend God.  If teachers are taught of God, if their lessons are daily learned in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST they will work in Christ's lines.  They will win and draw with Christ; for every child and youth is PRECIOUS."

 38.  FE278  " Every teacher has his own peculiar traits of character to watch lest Satan should use him as his agent to destroy souls, by his own unconsecrated traits of character.  The ONLY SAFETY FOR TEACHERS IS TO LEARN DAILY IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST, HIS MEEKNESS.  His lowliness of heart, then self will be hid in Christ, and he will meekly wear the yoke of Christ, and consider that he is dealing with His heritage."

 39.  FE280  "A Christlike nature is not selfish, not unkind, and will not hurt the souls of those who are struggling with Satan's temptations.  It will enter into the feelings of those who are tempted that the trials and temptations shall be so managed as to bring out the gold and consume the dross.  This is the practice which God appoints to all.  In this, CHRIST'S SCHOOL,  all may learn their lessons daily, both teachers and pupils, to be patient, humble, generous, noble.  You will all have to seek God most earnestly in prayer mingled with living faith, and the molding hand of God will bring out His own image in your character.  TEMPTATIONS WILL COME, BUT NOT OVERCOME."

 40.  FE303-4  "Jesus says, "I call you not servants;....but I have called you friends."  When you appreciate His wondrous love, love and gratitude will be in your heart as a well spring of joy......Flattery is a part of the world's policy, but it is no part Christ's policy.  Through flattery poor human beings, full of frailty and infirmities, come to think that they are efficient and worthy, and become puffed up in their fleshly mind.  They become intoxicated with the idea that they possess ability beyond what they do have, and their religious experience becomes unbalanced.  Unless in the providence of God they shall be turned from these deceptions, and become converted, and learn the A B C of religion in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST, THEY WILL LOSE THEIR SOULS."

41.  FE343  "A knowledge of the attributes of the character of Christ Jesus cannot be obtained by means of the highest education in the most scientific schools.  This wisdom is learned FROM THE GREAT TEACHER ALONE.  The lessons of Christlike meekness, lowliness of heart, reverence for sacred things are taught nowhere effectively EXCEPT IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  Moses had been taught to expect flattery and praise because of his superior abilities; but now he was to learn a different lesson.  As a shepherd of sheep."

 42.  FE352  "Many are ruining themselves physically, mentally. and morally, by overdevotion to study.  They are defrauding themselves for time and eternity through practicing habits of intemperance in seeking to get an education.  They are losing their desire to learn, IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST, lessons of meekness and lowliness of heart.  Every moment that passes is fraught with eternal results.  Integrity will be the sure result of following in the way of righteousness."

(Note that the schools of men listed below means ALL SCHOOLS OF MEN-- BOTH SECULAR AND THEOLOGICAL, SDA AND ALL OTHERS. This was the problem with Paul that the Holy Spirit solved by totally re-training him in Christ's School. Pauls training in the school of theology (Rabbi's) was useless to God. See Gal 1:11-20.)

 43. * FE355  "Many are seeking efficiency for the exalted work of God BY PERFECTED THEIR EDUCATION IN THE SCHOOLS OF MEN, will find that they have failed of learning the more important lessons which the Lord would teach them.  By neglecting to submit themselves TO THE IMPRESSIONS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, by not living in obedience to all of God's requirements, their spiritual efficiency has become weakened; they have lost what ability they had to do successful work for God.  BY ABSENTING THEMSELVES FROM THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST, they have forgotten the sound of the voice of the Teacher, AND HE CANNOT DIRECT THEIR COURSE.

 44.   FE357  "We have not a temporal millennium in which to do the work of warning the world.  There is need of transformation of soul.  The most effective intelligence that can  be obtained will be obtained in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  Understand that I say nothing in these words to denounce education, but to warn those who are in danger of carrying that which is lawful to unlawful extremes, AND OF MAKING ALTOGETHER TOO MUCH OF HUMAN EDUCATION."

 45.   FE361  "YOU NEED TO BE LEARNING IN THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST TO-DAY.  The Lord has power to work with His agents.  You are loading down POOR FINITE MEN WITH WEIGHTY ADVANTAGES to do a large work, when they will have NO OPPORTUNITY OR CALL to use a large share of the burden of studies that they have undertaken to master."

 46.   FE381  "Those who are preparing for the heavenly abodes should be recommended to make the Bible their chief book of study."

"These popular authors have not pointed out to the students the way that leads to eternal life.  "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent." The authors of books current in our schools are recommended and exalted as learned men; their education is in every way deficient, unless they themselves have been educated in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST and by practical knowledge bear witness to the world of God as the most essential study for children and youth."

47.  FE397   "God holds teachers responsible for their work as educators. They must learn daily in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST in order to uplift the youth who have a lax training at home, and who have not formed studious habits, who have little knowledge of the future immortal life, for which the highest price was paid by God of heaven in giving His only begotten Son to live a life of humiliation  and die a most shameful death, "that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."

 48.  FE450   "The unfolding of God, as represented in Jesus Christ, furnishes a theme that is grand to contemplate, and that will, if studied, sharpen the mind, and elevate and enable the facilities.  As the human learns these lessons in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST, trying to become as Christ was, meek and lowly of heart, he will learn the most useful of all lessons,----that intellect is supreme only as it is sanctified by a living CONNECTION WITH GOD."

 49.  FE520   "It is the privilege of all who bear responsibility in the work of the gospel to be apt learners in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  The professed follower of Christ must not be led by the dictates of his own will; his mind must be trained to think Christ's thoughts, and enlightened to comprehend the will and way of God.  Such a believer will be a follower of Christ's methods of work."

 50.  FE525  "Every teacher should be a daily learner in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST, lest he lose the sense of what constitutes true physical, mental, and moral excellence.  No one should place himself as a teachers of others WHO IS NOT CONSTANTLY WORKING OUT HIS OWN SALVATION BY RECEIVING AN ALL- ROUND EDUCATION."

 51.  FE543-4   "THOSE WHO ARE SEEKING TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE IN THE SCHOOLS OF EARTH SHOULD REMEMBER THAT ANOTHER SCHOOL ALSO CLAIMS THEM AS STUDENTS,-----THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST.  FROM THIS SCHOOL THE STUDENTS ARE NEVER GRADUATED."     "Those who become so absorbed in less important studies that they cease to learn in the SCHOOL OF CHRIST, ARE MEETING WITH INFINITE LOSS."

"Let the Truth Cut"

Spiritual Gifts Vol. 2, page 284-5.  "Preachers should have NO SCRUPLES to reach that truth as it is found in God's word.  LET THE TRUTH CUT.  I have been shown that why ministers have not had more success, THEY ARE AFRAID OF HURTING FEELINGS, FEARFUL OF NOT BEING COURTEOUS, and they lower the standard of truth, and conceal if possible the peculiarity of our faith. I saw that God COULD NOT MAKE SUCH SUCCESSFUL.  The truth MUST BE POINTED, and the necessity of a decision urged.  And as false shepherds are crying, peace, and are PREACHING SMOOTH THINGS, THE SERVANTS OF GOD MUST CRY LOUD, AND SPARE NOT, AND LEAVE THE RESULTS WITH GOD,"
